Mo is a co-partner at SGE, a civil engineer holding a Bachelor of Science in Engineering. He runs the firm's field program: scheduling, site execution, and the coordination that moves a file from first inspection through to a sealed report and a closed out deficiency list. Most of what he does is unglamorous and it is the reason projects land on the date they were promised.

His technical work centres on machine safeguarding and the control systems behind it. That means task based risk assessment under CSA Z432 and ISO 12100, determining required Performance Level under ISO 13849-1 and then verifying the achieved level from category, diagnostic coverage and common cause failure. He assesses safety PLC logic and safety relay architecture, dual channel and forced guided contact arrangements, and calculates minimum safety distance under ISO 13855 from measured stopping performance rather than catalogue response times. Fixed guard design, interlock selection and hazardous energy control under CSA Z460 sit in the same body of work.

He also carries SGE's construction safety and structural verification work, including installation phase coordination under Ontario Regulation 213/91, racking review under CSA A344, and anchor proof load testing on guarding, racking and equipment anchorage. He would rather spend an extra hour measuring than write a finding he cannot defend.

Carson is a co-partner at SGE and a mechanical engineer with a Master of Science in Engineering from Purdue University. He brings twelve years of practice in fire safety and machine safeguarding, and he leads the technical side of the firm: risk assessment methodology, standards interpretation, and the engineering judgement behind every finding SGE issues.

Combustible dust is the area he is asked about most. He runs dust hazard analyses under NFPA 660, the consolidated standard that absorbed NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655 and 664 in December 2024. That work starts with material characterisation, coordinating sampling and laboratory testing for Kst, Pmax, minimum explosible concentration, minimum ignition energy, cloud and layer ignition temperature and limiting oxygen concentration, then establishing the St class and working compartment by compartment through generation, accumulation, ignition sources and secondary explosion potential. Where mitigation is required he produces deflagration vent area and vent path calculations under NFPA 68, and specifies isolation and suppression under NFPA 69. Collector siting, ducting and return air arrangements under NFPA 91, along with hazardous location classification, follow from the same analysis.

His safeguarding work runs on CSA Z432 and ISO 13849-1, with fire and life safety code review under NFPA 30, 33, 86 and 51B where a process touches flammable liquids, spray application, industrial ovens or hot work. He is careful about the boundary between what a calculation shows and what it does not, and he will tell you when a question needs laboratory data rather than an opinion.

Nik Scheu, Red Seal Electrician

Twenty years in industrial electrical installation

Nik is SGE's project manager for panel building and a Red Seal certified electrician with twenty years in industrial electrical installation. He came up on the tools, and he still spends most of his week either in the shop or on a plant floor rather than behind a desk.

He runs control panel design and fabrication end to end: enclosure layout, component selection, wire sizing and routing, terminal and conductor labelling, protective device coordination and short circuit current rating, all built to the Canadian Electrical Code and CSA C22.2 No. 14. Safety circuits are his particular focus, including safety relay wiring, dual channel monitored inputs, forced guided contact feedback loops, guard interlock and light curtain terminations, and the PLC and safety PLC integration around them. He builds panels that an electrician who has never seen the machine can still troubleshoot at two in the morning.

On site he handles installation inspections, load and voltage drop calculations, conduit and cable sizing, panel commissioning and functional verification of installed protective measures. When SGE issues a finding that an interlock is wired incorrectly or a safety relay is not being monitored, Nik is usually the person who confirmed it with a meter.
